In the early hours of July 5th, a situation that began as a jewelry store burglary escalated into an exchange of gunfire and a nearly four-hour standoff in Bloomington, Minnesota. According to a Facebook post by the Bloomington Police Department, their officers were initially tied up with the burglary report when Richfield Police were called to assist with other emergencies, including a suicide threat at a residence on the 8700 block of 12th Avenue South.
The encounter quickly spiraled when Richfield officers, upon arrival, were met with gunfire from a 36-year-old male in crisis, Andrew James Maxwell, the gunfire exchange led to the deployment of Bloomington's Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and crisis negotiators were tasked with establishing communication; this culminated in Maxwell's surrender and subsequent arrest at approximately 4:00 A.M. without further incident. "The suspect, 36-year-old Andrew James Maxwell of Bloomington, is currently being held at the Bloomington Police Department pending charges," detailed the Bloomington PD's post.
No injuries were reported among the law enforcement officers or the individual involved in the standoff. The incident is now under the investigation of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, an agency commonly brought in to handle officer-involved shootings and sensitive matters within the state.
This dramatic series of events speaks to the often-unpredictable nature of police work, where officers responding to a call for service can find themselves facing life-threatening situations, the Bloomington headquarters have not released further details yet, but the community has been assured that there is no immediate danger. The public is awaiting more information as the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension proceeds with its inquiry into the officer-involved shooting and the circumstances leading to Maxwell's potential charges.
