Authorities have identified the body of a 95-year-old man found at the base of the cliffs below Point Fermin Park in San Pedro last week, confirming it to belong to missing person Walter Curtis Wolfe, as reported by KTLA. Wolfe had been reported missing on July 8, after being last seen in the area of the 800 block of North Malgren Avenue. His disappearance prompted a search, with the Los Angeles Police Department and the community appealing for assistance in locating the nonagenarian.
The discovery of Wolfe's vehicle five miles from his last known location at the 800 block of West Paseo Del Mar, near Point Fermin, a place he was said to frequent for walks, gave a grim direction to the search, the Los Angeles Fire Department received a report of a "deceased person near the bottom of the cliffs" just before 5 p.m. on July 11 which led to the eventual discovery of his body, firefighters were tasked with recovering Wolfe's remains, utilizing a helicopter to hoist his body from the cliffs, and landing near the Korean Bell to transfer his body for further investigation. However, there's been no public disclosure of how Wolfe might have ended up on the cliffs or whether foul play is suspected in his death.
The Los Angeles Police Department's Public Information Office released an update on July 18, notifying the public that the deceased had been officially identified by the Coroner's Office and that Wolfe's family had been informed of the tragic outcome, details surrounding the circumstances of Wolfe's death are currently under investigation and no further information has been released at this juncture.
