A 40-year-old man from Brandon, Rosson Hamilton, is facing charges of wire fraud, with the potential to be sentenced to up to 20 years in federal prison for each of the two counts he faces. The announcement came from United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg, outlining the charges which stem from allegations that Hamilton attempted to defraud the Small Business Administration through false claims in a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan application.
According to court documents, the supposed fraudulent activities took place between February 2021, and January 2022, during which Hamilton is accused of having made false representations to secure economic relief intended to support businesses in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the indictment, it's important to remember that it represents only formal accusations, and the presumption of innocence remains with the defendant until proven guilty.
The case against Hamilton falls under the purview of the COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force, which was put into action in May 2021. This coalition was forged to amp up the efforts to root out, and prevent pandemic-related swindles, bringing together resources from the Department of Justice and other government agencies. The task force is crucial not just in prosecuting fraudulent schemes, but also in guiding the administration of relief programs to avoid such exploitation in the future.
This particular case against Hamilton was brought to the fore by the collective investigative efforts of several agencies including the Federal Housing Finance Agency – Office of Inspector of the General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Small Business Administration – Office of Inspector General. Special Assistant United States Attorney Chris Poor is tasked with the prosecution. As fraud seems to weave an ever-complicated web across the critical support systems put in place during the pandemic, cases such as these serve as a reminder of the vigilance required to safeguard the integrity of these relief efforts.
