Residents looking to beat the summer heat in Knox County will have to adjust their plans as the splashpad at Carl Cowan Park has been closed for maintenance. According to WVLT, the much-loved splashpad is out of commission due to a need for repairs. Knox County representatives encouraged locals to seek out alternative water fun at nearby facilities, stating, "We still have other splashpad locations you can visit in the meantime! Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to keep our community parks safe and functional."
A water leak and pump issues are the culprits behind the closure, which has led to a substantial water loss from the splashpad's tank over a two-day period. Jason Halliburton, Knox County park maintenance director, indicated the urgency of the situation. "The fix is a priority and crews hope to reopen the facilities July 4," Halliburton told Knox News. Beyond the splashpad, Carl Cowan Park features amenities including paddling and fishing opportunities, sports fields, and playgrounds, all of which are affected by a closure.
For those looking for alternatives to Carl Cowan Park's splashpad, Knox County has recommended New Harvest Park at 4775 New Harvest Lane and Powell Station Park at 2318 W. Emory Road as go-to spots to cool down and enjoy the outdoors. These options provide similar facilities to help families stay refreshed during the hot summer days.
"County Parks & Recreation crews say they hope to have Carl Cowan’s splashpad back open for Thursday’s Independence Day holiday," was the message conveyed by WIVK. Updates on the repair progress and reopening of the Carl Cowan Park splashpad will continue to be provided by the county as they become available. Until then, Knoxville locals can explore the other splashpads and park amenities that remain open.
