A 30-year-old Carlton man, Stephen Jeremiah Hansen, has been handed a severe penalty for crimes against children, sentenced to a quarter-century behind bars for producing child pornography; the US Attorney's Office in Minnesota confirms the sentencing alongside a term of 15 years supervised release post-imprisonment. According to documents obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Hansen’s reprehensible actions spanned from 2015 to 2022, involving the sexual exploitation of at least six minors, their ages stretching from two to 12, his abuse escalating to recording their exposure and assault.
Authorities discovered at least 250 images of child pornography on Hansen's devices; he pled guilty to one count of production and attempted production of child pornography on September 26, 2023, and has now faced the consequences as of July 23, 2024, with Judge Jerry W. Blackwell of the U.S. District Court handing down his sentence. The conviction results from concerted efforts under Project Safe Childhood, an initiative spearheaded since 2006 by the Department of Justice to intensify the fight against child sexual exploitation and support for the victims who need respite and realization of justice.
The investigation that brought Hansen to account drew on the resources of the FBI, the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, and the St. Paul Police Department, illustrating the multi-agency collaboration common in Project Safe Childhood cases, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ruth S. Shnider leading the prosecution that led up to his recent sentencing.
