Minneapolis residents in East Harriet and King Field neighborhoods can expect to see construction crews from CenterPoint Energy upgrading the natural gas infrastructure starting in early September this year. The essential maintenance work will span several months and involve select streets from 36th Street W. to 46th Street W. and from Lake Harrett Parkway to Stevens Avenue, according to a recent announcement by the company.
The infrastructure upgrade will commence with the boring of a new main underneath one sidewalk on each road. Subsequently, old service lines will either reconnect to the new main or be completely replaced, depending on their conditions. Each affected residence will make a two- to three-hour window for technicians to move inside gas meters outside and then relight any gas appliance pilot lights. Following the underground work, the excavated areas will be filled with temporary dirt or gravel until permanent restoration, which could include concrete or black dirt, grass seed, and biodegradable netting, takes place—potentially after a span of several weeks.
Streets that will see mains replaced, meters moved outdoors, and potential service line reconnections include stretches of 36th Street W., 38th Street W., and others within the specified blocks. Meanwhile, other areas such as Lake Harriet Parkway and Fremont Avenue S. are slated only for meter relocation and selective service line replacements. Residents can find the full list of impacted streets and steps of the project here.
