Baltimore is about to get a heavy dose of funk and soul as Chaka Khan, affectionately known as the "Queen of Funk," is slated to headline the opening night of Artscape in August. Khan, a music icon with a career spanning five decades, will bring her powerful vocals and a slew of hits to the Artscape stage on Friday, August 2. This performance, which is part of the city's largest free arts festival, marks another visit for Khan since her debut at the event in 1993, as reported by WMAR2 News.
"Chaka Kahn has been a soulful musical force and symbol of strength and determination for women all over the world for 50 years," Rachel Graham, CEO of the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts, lauded in a statement. Meanwhile, Mayor Brandon Scott's excitement radiated through Instagram with a post that teased an unforgettable performance. "Chaka Khan is going to grace Baltimore with a show like we’ve never seen before – and I can’t wait to welcome her with all the charm that Charm City has to offer," he stated, per WMAR2 News.
Khan, who has raked in 10 Grammy Awards and numerous other accolades, is joined on the Artscape roster by rising singer Maeta. Known for anthems like "I'm Every Woman" and "Higher Love," Khan is expected to deliver her signature blend of R&B, funk, and soul to an eager audience. Artscape, which sprawls across neighborhoods such as Mount Vernon and Station North from August 2-4, offers a diverse array of performing arts, shows, and entertainment, as detailed by CBS Baltimore.
Adding to the vibrant lineup, the four-time Grammy nominee Sheila E. will be commanding the stage on Saturday, while The Original Wailers, featuring Al Anderson, a former member of Bob Marley & The Wailers, will be closing out the festival on Sunday. These performances will reinforce the city's status as a hub for culture and creative expression. "The goal is to continue to elevate Baltimore as a beacon for arts, culture and creative innovation nationwide. Partnership with stakeholder communities is valuable," Rachel Graham stated, as per CBS Baltimore.
With the addition of such celebrated artists, Artscape 40 promises to be an electrifying testament to Baltimore’s commitment to the arts.
