During a recent patrol along US-101 in San Rafael, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers managed to foil an attempt by several individuals to discard a large quantity of narcotics before a traffic stop. According to a post on CHP Marin's Facebook page, Officers Palomares and Mendez initiated a stop for speeding, which quickly escalated into a drug seizure operation.
The suspects, perhaps in a moment of panic, began throwing bags of drugs out of their vehicle's windows—apparently under the misconception that this would deter discovery. After apprehending the vehicle, officers retraced the thrown items and collected various substances. The haul included 8.3 grams of what is suspected to be fentanyl, in addition to other drugs like methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, psilocybin, and Xanax pills. This incident resulted in the arrest of four individuals on charges of possessing drugs with the intent to sell.
While the quantity of fentanyl might appear insubstantial, the reality of its potency is staggering. As per the CHP Marin announcement, a mere two milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal. The substance seized in the traffic stop amounted to over 4,100 potentially fatal doses, casting a harrowing light on the drug's lethal efficiency.
