As Koke‘e State Park deals with the aftermath of a wildfire that has scorched approximately 1,300 acres of land, officials have reported a significant advancement in containment efforts. According to a release from the County of Kaua‘i, the blaze is now 70% contained as of yesterday evening. While air support is set to cease operations at dusk, ground crews will press on through the night to battle the remaining flames.
Despite the severity of the wildfire, there have been no reported injuries nor are any structures said to be at immediate risk. In a move signaling progress, Koke‘e Road has been deemed safe enough to reopen to two-way traffic at 7 p.m. yesterday. Waimea Canyon Drive, on the other hand, will stay closed in both directions until further notice. Additionally, the earlier voluntary evacuation notice for Koke‘e has been lifted coinciding with the reopening of the road.
The electric infrastructure affected by the fire has also seen quick action from utility services. Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) restored power to the affected Koke‘e circuit by late yesterday morning, and will address the damaged poles for replacement at a later time.
A coalition of local and state agencies have rallied in response to the emergency, showcasing a unified front against the unexpected force of nature. Among the many contributing to the containment and safety efforts are the Kaua‘i Fire Department, Hawai‘i Department of Land and Natural Resources, and Kaua‘i Police Department. The Kaua‘i Emergency Operations Center remains partially activated, maintaining a watch over the situation as the firefight enters its next phase.
For ongoing updates and details on road closures and advisories, residents and visitors are advised to stay informed through official county channels and news releases.
