A Dade City man has been condemned to 30 years in federal prison following his prior admission of guilt for charges related to the production of child sexual abuse material. As reported by the United States Attorney's Office, Olejuwan Lamar Steele, aged 30, of Zephyrhills faced sentencing by U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday and will be facing a lifetime of monitored release after his prison term ends. Additionally, Steele has been directed to register as a sex offender and was ordered to provide $3,000 in restitution towards the victim.
Steele's conviction originates from an incident dating back to 2022, wherein, acting as a babysitter for a two-year-old child in Pasco County's Dade City, he recorded and subsequently disseminated videos of child sexual abuse over the internet. According to Homeland Security Investigations Tampa, whose Assistant Special Agent in Charge Micah McCombs stated, "This babysitter exploited the innocence of a child in his care, betrayed the trust placed in him, and violated the sanctity of childhood itself." The case amassed critical backing from the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation leading to Steele's sentencing was a joint undertaking by Homeland Security Investigations Tampa and the Pasco Sheriff's Office. The prosecution was managed by Assistant United States Attorney Erin Claire Favorit. Steele, aligning with his plea agreement, admitted his guilt earlier this year on April 17.
This distressing case stands as a part of Project Safe Childhood a prolific push by the Department of Justice initiated in May 2006 targeting the rampant rise of child exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood coalesces federal, state, and local operations to root out and prosecute offenders who sexually exploit children, aiming to identify and safeguard victims.
