DeKalb County is casting out a line to young anglers with an invitation to its Gateway to Fishing Program, a partnership between DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Chapel Hill Park's fishing pond in Decatur, the event is shaping up as a prime opportunity for youth to reel in some fun while learning the ropes of fishing.
In an effort to make fishing a more accessible pastime in metro and suburban parks, the free event will provide a thorough run-down of fishing basics, yet aims to weave in plenty of hands-on experiences. The Georgia Department DNR will be rolling out its Mobile Catch Center, stocked with fishing equipment and supplies, ensuring participants have everything they need to possibly catch their first fish.
Families with kids aged 5 to 17 are especially encouraged to get their young ones hooked on fishing, although those under 13 must have an adult companion. According to a news release by DeKalb County, attendees should come prepared with water, snacks, a hat, and sunscreen to enjoy a day of angling under the summer sun.
Interested parties seeking more details on the event, or parents looking to plan a memorable Saturday for their kids, should reach out to LaShanda Davis, public relations specialist, at 404-710-6331, for she is the navigator through the ins and outs of this aquatic adventure.
