Douglas County is making moves toward improving its transportation infrastructure by introducing a measure for voter consideration this November. The Board of Commissioners has approved a resolution to place a Transport Special Local Option Sales Tax (T-SPLOST) on the ballot – a move aimed at paving the way for enhanced roadways and mobility for its citizens. As reported by Douglas County Government, if voters give the green light, this initiative could funnel in excess of $100 million into local projects over a six-year period.

Maintaining and improving the 700-plus miles of road that support the daily commute of over 100,000 motorists is no small feat for a growing county. Doubling down on infrastructure efforts, the proposed one percent sales tax increment from TSPLOST comes as a bolster to the current funding, earmarked specifically for road safety, congestion relief and better overall quality of life. The revenue from the tax, if implemented, will be collected from 2025 to 2031.

To get the wheels turning and the public's gears engaged, the Douglas County Department of Transportation is hosting a series of public engagement meetings. Citizens are encouraged to drop in and share their thoughts on what the road ahead should look like. Kicking off these community-driven events is a meeting scheduled for July 17, 2024, at 6:30 PM, taking place in Citizen’s Hall at the Douglas County Courthouse.
