Chaos ensued in an apartment complex on E 2nd St yesterday, as Duluth Police Department (DPD) officers arrested 47-year-old Leland Lewis on charges of first-degree burglary. According to a DPD update, officers responded to a call at around 3:10 p.m. about property damage and unlawful entry. The situation escalated when they encountered Lewis, armed with a box cutter knife, steering them toward utilizing less lethal options to secure his detention.
The suspect, who had barricaded himself, was found uncooperative in a hallway. As per the DPD, officers "attempted to give commands to have Lewis surrender peacefully," but these efforts proved ineffective. Afterward, less lethal methods were employed to detain Lewis. During the confrontation, thankfully, no officers sustained injuries. Following his arrest, Lewis was taken to a local hospital and, subsequently, lodged at the St Louis County Jail with charges looming over his head for two counts of 1st Degree Burglary and Felony Obstructing Legal Process.
Earlier in the day, the situation prompted the DPD to issue a public advisory urging people to avoid the area to provide officers with the necessary space for their operations. The scene, once an ordinary residential area, was swiftly transformed into a hive of law enforcement activity. DPD deployed a drone in an attempt to locate the suspect within the building, signaling the gravity of the search and the lengths to which police would go to ensure public safety.
