Fans of Ellen DeGeneres in San Antonio were left disappointed as the comedian's proposed final stand-up show, which was scheduled for July 12, has been canceled with refunds to be issued, FOX San Antonio reports. The Majestic Theater, which was to host the event, cited on their website that "Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel this event," without providing further reasons for the cancellation, the venue's official statement detailed not much else, leaving the circumstances of the decision opaque.
Further information obtained by Yahoo News reveals that Ellen DeGeneres has also canceled additional shows in Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago, as per the notices on the Ticketmaster website; fans who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster will automatically receive a refund to the original payment method within 14-21 days, which might be a small consolation to those who had been looking forward to the performances. Ellen began her "Ellen's Last Stand... Up Tour" earlier this year following a turbulent exit from her daytime talk show, marked by accusations of a toxic work environment, an apology that fell like a needle in a haystack of controversy, and then a curt bow out from the television studio where it all unfolded.
During a show in Santa Rosa, California, DeGeneres addressed the audience in her signature straightforward style, "I am many things, but I am not mean," as reported by SFGate, to which she also remarked, "Let me catch you up on what’s been going on with me since you last saw me," swiftly turning to humor as she stated, "I got chickens," then added, "Oh yeah, and I got kicked out of show business for being mean," Ellen has expressed that she's tough, demanding, impatient, but refuted the characterization of being mean, she blurs the lines between self-deprecating comedy and earnest self-defense, it's hard to discern whether she's dunking or defending.
DeGeneres has articulated plans to retreat from the public eye after her upcoming Netflix special, signaling an end to a career that saw her rebound from an initial Hollywood ouster in the late '90s to reach heights of television fame, only to confront new waves of criticism, "This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done," she declared at the same show according to SFGate; despite the abrupt cancellations and refund notices dampening some of the tour's buzz, the remaining dates including an August 1st show at Radio City Music Hall are still set to go on, for now, DeGeneres seems intent on exiting with the timing and terms set firmly by her—assuming any further cancellations don't arise.
