A July 4th celebration turned traumatic for a North Texas family after a shark attacked them off South Padre Island's coast. During an interview with KSAT, Tabatha Sullivent recounted the harrowing encounter. She was in the water with her daughter and a couple of teenagers when she mistook a large shark for a fish. "There are about four of us in the water... And all I saw was something gray in the water," Sullivent recalled.

The situation escalated when the shark charged, prompting a defensive reaction from Sullivent. "I thought, ‘Oh my God! It’s a huge fish.’ And it was coming at us, so I kicked at it, and that’s when I think it grabbed my leg," Sullivent told KSAT. The attack left her in shock and her husband Cary sustained injuries after intervening. "I was just screaming 'help' and trying to get to the shore," said Sullivent of the traumatic ordeal.

Videos shared on social media captured the aftermath, showing strangers rushing to rescue Sullivent from the ocean. Texas Parks and Wildlife officials suggest that the same large shark was responsible for injuring a total of four people, with two suffering significant bites and another two facing minor injuries. Despite needing multiple reconstructive surgeries, doctors remain optimistic that Sullivent will retain use of her leg.

The shark assault coincided closely with a sentimental milestone for the Sullivent family, marking their 16th wedding anniversary. While they ended up spending the day in the hospital, Sullivent expressed a sense of gratitude. "Somebody or something was definitely looking over us for sure," she told CBS News Texas. Authorities continue to monitor local waters to ensure the safety of beachgoers amidst this rare, yet alarming, event.
