A fatal accident disrupted traffic on I-85 South in Gwinnett County yesterday, where at least one person was confirmed dead following a significant collision, Gwinnett County police have reported. The crash, involving at least two cars and three people, occurred on the interstate between the I-985 merge, and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, with the details on the number of victims and the extent of their injuries pending release by the authorities.
Due to the severity of the accident, the roadway was largely blocked, with only the far left lane remaining open causing major delays. In a bid to manage the traffic situation, police had advised drivers to seek alternate routes, warning that the blockage was expected to last "for some time." The crash site was not cleared, and the lanes reopened until just before 6 p.m. that evening, as Atlanta News First reported.
Otha Rucker Jr., a resident living near the accident site, expressed his shock to FOX 5 Atlanta about the gravity of the crash. Rucker, who was expecting friends for a barbecue, grew concerned when they failed to arrive, discovering they were caught in the traffic caused by the accident. Upon witnessing the aftermath, Rucker said, "The ceiling is on the tires. The ceiling is where the tires are supposed to be. Whoever was in that car, it’s over with." He noted the remnants of what appeared to be a trip gone awry, with a blood-stained windshield and a Louis Vuitton purse scattered among the wreckage.
The identity of those involved in the Sunday collision has not been publicly disclosed as of yet, as Gwinnett County police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the accident. The community is left waiting for answers, and for many the road serves as a stark reminder of life's unpredictability. FOX 5 Atlanta pledged to follow up on the incident, committed to providing updates on the victims and the cause of the tragedy as information becomes available.
