Orlando's grassroots organization, Service and Love Together (SALT), is facing dire financial constraints, leading to the temporary suspension of crucial services for the local homeless population. According to Eric Camarillo, the executive director of SALT, the organization is grappling with a $600,000 shortfall due to decreased government funding and delayed donations. In a heartfelt interview, Camarillo expressed grave concerns about the impact on those who rely on SALT’s array of services, including laundry, showers, and mail, stating, "There are people out here that just can't care for themselves, and they don't have anyone that can care for them," as reported by WUSF.

Notably hit by the funding cut is the mobile service component that provides laundry and showers to those living on the streets of downtown Orlando. The organization, which has been attempting to keep afloat and continue some level of service despite the financial crunch, now desperately needs to raise at least $200,000 to maintain its operations. Camarillo revealed, "It's not necessarily (Orlando and Orange County’s) fault. For the last four years, they were infused with COVID funding that was infusing us in that time period," as per WUSF.

The importance of services like mail delivery can't be understated, as they enable clients lacking residential addresses to receive crucial correspondence, ranging from paychecks to legal documents. The mail service is especially critical, so much so that SALT intends to retain a part-time staff member or volunteer to manage it. “We're doing 80 showers a day, 50 loads of laundry a day. We're doing mail for 400 different clients, we're storing belongings for people going on job interviews and going to work. We're charging people's phones and their devices,” Camarillo said, according to WUSF.

Moreover, SALT's services are not the only ones being jeopardized by the funding cliff, other local organizations are similarly struggling, with calls for more support issued from entities like the Christian Service Center. The executive director, Eric Gray, labeled SALT as an "emerging powerhouse" in the realm of homeless services and underscored the gravity the organization's hiatus would have on the community. Supporting this, Carla Cox, the Center's Director of Operations noted, “We’re all beyond capacity. If there is anything we can do we will because we need them in our community. If they don't exist our jobs become 10 times harder because they carry a very large load," She said, as per WUSF.

The tight situation at SALT comes against a backdrop of a steep rise in the region's homelessness, as reported by the Homeless Services Network of Central Florida. Donations are crucial for the revival of full services.
