Early this July, Sand Creek Park in Coon Rapids narrowly avoided a potentially catastrophic fire thanks to its trusty fire sprinkler system. The incident, which took place on July 8, unfolded when a garbage container ignited alongside a recycling bin, threatening the park's concessions building with growing flames, according to Coon Rapids Minnesota. The blaze, captured by security cameras, eventually triggered the fire sprinklers which promptly doused the flames.
Despite the immediate threat, damage to the building remained minimal, with Coon Rapids Fire Marshal Todd Williams quantifying the losses: "We have about $900 in garbage cans that have to be replaced," and, "Inside the building, it's just probably a matter of a couple hundred dollars to get it cleaned up and the three sprinkler heads, it's going to be roughly about $1,000 to replace them," Williams told Coon Rapids Civic Alerts, totaling the damage at just under $3,000.
"Make sure you put them in a bucket of water and soak them overnight, then dispose of them the next day into the garbage," Williams said, "But make sure that they are totally out," he added, as per Coon Rapids Minnesota, punctuating his safety advisory with the importance of ensuring fireworks are completely extinguished before disposal.
