Five individuals were hospitalized following a high-speed chase that culminated in a collision Monday evening in the Rancho Murieta vicinity of Sacramento County. The incident began with a report of a Hyundai Elantra speeding in Amador County shortly before 8:00 p.m., as detailed by the California Highway Patrol in a statement obtained by ABC10. When authorities attempted to conduct an enforcement stop, the vehicle failed to yield.
Continuing onto Highway 49 and then onto Highway 16 westbound, the pursuit advanced into Sacramento County, ultimately reaching the intersection of Jackson Road and Murieta Parkway. In the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District's account to CBS News Sacramento, the chase ended when the Hyundai, traveling at approximately 80 mph, collided with a southbound Rivian RS1 driven by a woman, resulting, in a fiery aftermath.
The collision severely damaged the Hyundai which caught fire. A California Highway Patrol officer was able to extract the driver, a man, and his passenger, a woman, from the vehicle. Both sustained major injuries and were transported to the hospital. The occupants of the Rivian, including the driver and two passengers, sustained moderate injuries and were also hospitalized for treatment. Reports from the scene depicted the Rivian with significant damage to the driver's side, indicative of a T-bone collision.
Amidst the urgent response, two air ambulances were initially summoned but later canceled, and all injured parties were taken by ground transportation to local hospitals. The Hyundai is under suspicion of being a stolen vehicle, adding an additional layer to the ongoing investigation.
