A 21-year-old El Dorado County Sheriff's Office correctional officer died early Friday morning after his vehicle rolled off Highway 50 near Strawberry and plunged down a steep embankment along the South Fork American River corridor. Ryan Marietti, a 2023 graduate of Ponderosa High School who had served at both the Placerville and South Lake Tahoe jails, was identified by the sheriff's office in a Saturday social media post announcing his death.
The single-vehicle crash happened shortly after 5 a.m. near 41 Mile Stone Road, where Marietti's vehicle lost control, rolled over, and fell roughly 70 feet down an embankment off the highway, according to California Highway Patrol logs relayed in regional collision reports and cited by Maison Law. Staffing county custody operations at both locations requires officers to travel the mountain corridor connecting the west slope to the Tahoe basin — the same stretch of Highway 50 where Marietti's crash occurred.
