In a move that discontinues the city's six bus routes, Gastonia has introduced a new on-demand microtransit service as of July 1, providing residents with a flexible transportation alternative. Gastonia’s Transportation Director Randi Gates pointed to aging buses, dwindling passenger numbers, and infrequent schedules as catalysts for the change, telling WFAE, "We're really only seeing an average of about seven passengers per hour over the system." GoGastonia, which can be hailed via an app or phone call, has launched with a fleet of 14 minivans, with four designed to be wheelchair accessible.

The initiative dubbed GoGastonia, allows users to book rides to any destination within city limits, for a flat rate. The fare for a one-way trip is set at $2, while for those over 65 years of age, or for riders with a disability, the price is reduced to $1, as reported by QC News. Children under five may ride at no cost, provided they are accompanied by an adult and have a car seat supplied by the parent or guardian. The service stipulates that riders must be at least 13 years old to ride unsupervised.

Gastonia officials are optimistic that the microtransit service will provide more efficient coverage for the area’s 50 square miles, addressing the common problem of lengthy waits and the hassle of trekking to bus stops. "On demand, you book a ride when you need it," Randi Gates explained in a statement obtained by WCNC. "The app will tell you where you need to go."

The service operates from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays, and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. till 6 p.m., articulating a vision for transit that meets the needs of Gastonia's modern-day commuters. To encourage residents to try GoGastonia, the city is offering an incentive of 10 free rides to users who register an account and book their first trip within the first month, according to the details shared with WFAE. These bonus trips are not subject to expiration, further sweetening the deal for potential passengers.

River North Transit, LLC has been contracted to operate the service, underscoring the transition to professional drivers who will helm the on-demand transportation. This shift from conventional bus routes represents a notable change in how the city's inhabitants move around, challenging the traditional paradigms of public transport in Gastonia.
