In a recent incident reported by the Gastonia Police, two K-9 units successfully tracked down suspects implicated in a spree of vehicle break-ins. The incident unfolded in a housing development off Old Dallas Highway, where individuals wearing ski masks were alleged to have targeted cars. According to WCCB Charlotte, the suspects sought refuge in the nearby woods, prompting the involvement of the trained dogs.
Reportedly, K-9 Officer Willis and his dog, Taco, pursued one of the individuals for a distance of one mile before making an apprehension. Willis recounted in a statement that "he and his K9 Taco tracked one mile into the woods and found both suspects," as noted by WCCB Charlotte. The chase continued when the second suspect attempted an evasive maneuver, ultimately failing to outpace K-9 Bo and Sergeant David Rowland. The suspect was found hiding in thick brush, according to police accounts.
In a similar vein, QC News detailed the coordinated effort that led to the capture of both suspects. K-9 Taco reportedly located a juvenile, while K-9 Bo succeeded in tracking the second suspect. Despite initial attempts to escape, law enforcement was able to arrest the suspects, who remain unidentified at this time.
Charges against the two individuals have not been disclosed as of yet. The Gastonia Police Department has not released the nature of the offenses pending further investigation. This event underscores the role that K-9 units play in local law enforcement, able to navigate and canvass terrain less manageable by their human counterparts. The success of this operation adds to the narrative of collaboration between officers and their K-9 partners in maintaining community safety.
