In giving a nod to community engagement and child safety, the Gatlinburg Police Department (GPD) and Gatlinburg Fire Department (GFD) are teaming up with Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center for the Back to School Bash on July 25. To be hosted at Rocky Top Sports World in Gatlinburg from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., this family-friendly event is open to the public and will not run your pockets — it's entirely free.

Police Chief Ronnie Barrett is looking to solidify the position of law enforcement in the eyes of Gatlinburg's youth. "Partnering with the Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center for this event is another avenue for the Gatlinburg Police Department to educate the community's children that law enforcement is a resource that they can count on to protect and serve them throughout their lives," he told GatlinburgTN.gov. It's a strategic move to gently remind us to always look to the police in times of need.

The kids attending the Fun and Safety Day can expect to walk away with more than just good memories. Alongside imparting valuable safety lessons, the event promises to hand out backpacks and school supplies, on a first-come-first-served basis. Plus, there's no such thing as a community event without some grub — hotdogs, chips, drinks, and snow cones are on the menu.

On the fire department's end, Fire Chief Charlie Cole understands the importance of making a lasting impression with practical lessons. "Being able to interact with the community's children and teaching the importance of safety lessons about things around their homes and schools that they encounter every day is one of the most important things the Gatlinburg Fire Department can do," Cole noted to GatlinburgTN.gov. Looking to boost their engagement, the firefighter team is set to not just entertain, but also to educate.
