Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been busy in Orlando, engaging with law enforcement and educators during two separate appearances on Tuesday. At the well-attended Florida Sheriffs Association 2024 Summer Conference in the morning, DeSantis didn't shy away from hot-button issues, specifically targeting Amendment 3, which proposes the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state, as reported by ClickOrlando.
"I think we've struck a more moderate course on this. I think what Colorado has done has been very extreme, and a lot of people regret it. I think California's been extreme, a lot of people there regret it," DeSantis said, as reported by WESH. His speech underlined a commitment to bolstering law enforcement, including a statewide recruiting initiative promising a $5,000 bonus for new law enforcement recruits.
The afternoon found the governor at a news conference alongside Florida Department of Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr., where he commended 74 district teachers of the year. As per details provided by WESH, DeSantis boasted about the state's investment in education, highlighting a particular focus on increasing teacher pay with a $4.6 billion effort. "This year alone, we have a categorical provision in our budget of $1.25 billion that can only be used to increase teacher salaries," the governor asserted, signaling the state's priority in educational improvement.
In a consistent theme of support for professional service, whether behind the badge or in front of the classroom, DeSantis used these platforms to underline his administration's policy focuses. The Florida Sheriffs Association conference served as a stage for reinforcing a "law and order" stance, while the news conference with Commissioner Diaz cast a spotlight on state educational achievements. Alongside the budget talks, DeSantis presented $20,000 checks to five teachers of the year finalists, an increase from the previous $15,000, as reported by WESH.
