In a move aimed at bolstering Georgia’s infrastructure, Governor Brian P. Kemp unveiled a comprehensive $1.5 billion investment, a plan set to enhance transportation across the state. This initiative, detailed in the Amended Fiscal Year 2024 budget, aims to accommodate Georgia's burgeoning job and population surge. "Over the last few years, we've welcomed unprecedented job creation to all regions of the Peach State, and this funding will ensure our already reliable infrastructure network can meet the needs of that incredible growth," Governor Kemp stated, according to a recent press release on the state's official website.

The announcement, first made during the 2024 Legislative Session, signifies more than a double in the state’s funding to cities and counties for local transportation requirements, with specific allocations poised to quickly respond to current infrastructure needs. The State Transportation Board, which reviewed the proposals at its monthly meeting, sees this investment as a down payment for anticipated expansion. "Hardworking Georgians will see further improvements to the roads and bridges they drive each day," Kemp emphasized, acknowledging the joint efforts of the Lt. Governor, Speaker of the House, and General Assembly members in securing this investment.

Key components of the transportation package include a sizeable injection of $250 million to more than double state funding for municipal and county transportation projects, and $593 million to swell GDOT's capital construction program by 58 percent—these funds are earmarked to help manage cost increases resulting from inflation and to fast-track projects. Additionally, a 32 percent bump by way of a $50 million allocation for GDOT’s capital maintenance budget will enable more state highways to be resurfaced.

The infrastructure plan also incorporates a significant focus on aviation and freight, with $98 million pledged to advance improvements at several general aviation airports and a robust $500 million to initiate a new program emphasizing infrastructure integral to freight transportation. This component aims to comprehensively improve the efficiency, safety, and reliability for the transit of goods through the Peach State. Lt. Governor Burt Jones touted the investment, asserting, "Investing surplus budget funds in existing and future transportation infrastructure is critical to ensure our businesses can expand, goods and services can be transported, and our citizens arrive safely to their destinations."

House Speaker Jon Burns echoed the sentiment of forward momentum, citings years of unparalleled growth throughout Georgia, which bolsters the rationale behind this transport-centric financial outlay. "This historic growth presents a significant opportunity to strengthen and secure our roads, bridges, and economic development centers that will face increased demand for the foreseeable future," Burns told in the aforementioned press release. With the details now public, a fuller picture has emerged on how the $1.5 billion will be dispersed, fulfilling the promise of keeping Georgia not just on the move, but planning strategically for busy and prosperous days ahead.
