Pennsylvania's bars and restaurants may be on the verge of a major toast, as a new bill awaits Governor Josh Shapiro’s signature. The legislation seeks to relax several state liquor laws, potentially extending the length of happy hours and making way for more flexible promotional deals to buoy the hospitality industry. This move is designed to boost profits for business owners and offer more wallet-friendly options for consumers, as reported by CBS News Pittsburgh.

Rich Cupka, a local bar owner, expressed his satisfaction with the state's initiative to untangle some of the "draconian laws" that have been tightening the grip since the Prohibition era. Under the new bill, happy hours could expand from 14 to a full 24 hours per week, accompanied by notable changes including permission for businesses to freely offer drinks as part of self-sponsored events. Governor Shapiro is expected to quickly sign to put these overdue changes into effect, changing the landscape of Pennsylvania’s nightlife and food scene.

Enthusiasm isn't just bubbling up from business owners. Local patrons are chiming in with support for the anticipated changes. "I'm all for it. Anything that helps the tavern owners and the consumer. It's a great idea, and it's good for the state of Pennsylvania," Gary Beswick said, as per WTAE.

Not only are longer happy hours on the horizon, but the legislation also intends to break down barriers for outdoor seating, and remnant flexibility from pandemic-era governance. To throw in added incentives for gastronomy aficionados alike, discounts on food and drink combos and the inclusion of up to two drinks in event tickets are in play. Brett Sanders, the bar manager at Sienna Mercato, praised the diversification of promotional possibilities, "We don't run a very long happy hour here in our business to begin with, so I don't know that the increase in happy hour is really going to affect us, although I do know that will positively affect a lot of the businesses around us," Sanders stated, according to WTAE.

The overarching aim of Pennsylvania's legislation overhaul is clear: to pump fresh energy into a sector still licking its wounds post-pandemic. Len Semplice, owner of Redbeard's Bar & Grill, is among the hopefuls looking forward to the boost. "Restaurants are still suffering right now. It never came back the way it was before (the pandemic), so we have to try to reinvent our businesses and try different things to bring in customers", he said, as detailed by WTAE. With the ink soon to dry on this legislation, Pennsylvania's nightlife might just get its groove back.
