In a crowd of over 500 law enforcement officials and community leaders, Abbott expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the state for their work in protecting communities, particularly regarding challenges posed by border policies. "It takes an extraordinary human being to be willing to put their life on the line to make sure that others are protected and that communities are safe," said Governor Abbott.
The governor's address pinpointed the dynamic duty profile of sheriffs as they adapt to emerging threats, specifically highlighting their role in the fentanyl crisis and in securing Texas' southern border—a task he suggests they are undertaking in the absence of federal enforcement. "Your job description is constantly changing as new dangers arise. None of those dangers, however, are as large or prolific as the dangers that we are seeing because of open border policies," the Governor mentioned.
