A gas line incident that prompted evacuations in Greenville, Michigan, was resolved late Sunday evening, allowing residents to return to their homes. According to WZZM13, emergency crews responded to reports of a very large gas leak around 7:45 p.m. after residents doing yard work thought they hit a tree root which later, to their alarm, was discovered to be a gas pipeline.
Montcalm County Central Dispatch initially issued an evacuation directive affecting individuals within a three-block radius of the leak's epicenter, near E Union Street and S Clay Street and then after ensuring the area was secure and the threat mitigated, residents were told they could return to their houses Greenville Public Safety, however, continued restricting access for those living in the most affected area of Union Street as crews worked on the scene, as described by a WOODTV update.
Amidst this commotion, officials were concerned about the risk of ignitions. "It's important to use caution when starting vehicles and using any electronics, and watch out for sparks or fire," the dispatch office informed the community. This advice aimed at preventing any incidents that could arise from errant sparks or flames in the vicinity of the escaping gas, the threat of which loomed until the Greenville Fire Department confirmed the situation was under control before 10:30 p.m.
Darren Jones, Deputy Director of the Greenville Fire Department, shed light on the cause of the frenzy telling FOX 17 that the accidental cutting of the gas line occurred as residents were doing work outside their home, initially mistaking it for a tree root which they attempted to remove with an axe the gas line's rupture prompted swift action by emergency services and required immediate attention to avert any potential disaster.
With the breach contained and the gas flow halted, the night concluded without further incident, and normalcy slowly returned to the streets of Greenville.
