Officials say the suspect was accused of menacing people with a weapon before deputies arrived. Asst. Chief Tommy Diaz, speaking to the scene, stated that the man took out a pistol from his waistband and pointed it at arriving law enforcement officers. After the suspect was wounded, he claimed the weapon was fake, a detail later shared on social media by Sheriff Gonzalez.
The confrontation led to a Harris County deputy discharging their firearm once inside the gas station, striking the suspect in the hip area, according to a FOX26 Houston report. The suspect's injuries are non-life-threatening, and he is expected to survive. No deputies were hurt during the altercation. It was later divulged by authorities that the suspect had an open felony warrant for burglary and a probation violation.
Authorities have yet to divulge the identity of the deputy involved or that of the suspect.
