Chaos erupted at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday when a gunman opened fire in an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In the midst of panic and fear, Jake Traylor, an NBC News presidential campaign reporter and son of UTSA head football coach Jeff Traylor, was recognized for his decisive actions to shield ABC correspondent Rachel Scott from the gunfire. According to a statement obtained by FOX San Antonio, Jake Traylor rejected any notion of heroism, saying, "I think the first natural reaction is, of course, safety of yourself and of others around you."
As the gunshots rang out, Traylor's first instinct was to use his own body to protect his colleague. Scott expressed her appreciation on social media platform X, "Extremely grateful for my security, Jeff who yanked me off the press riser & @jake__traylor who covered me on the ground. My heart goes out to everyone who was here tonight." This statement was accompanied by a video portraying the harrowing moment. While the incident unfolded, Scott's posting mirrored the courage shown by those in the press pen who to meticulously keep each other safe amidst pandemonium.

In an interview captured by KSAT, Traylor described the gunfire as "harrowing." He said, "We were all just covering each other and although that lasted a handful of seconds, that felt like a very long time." The event, which was expected to feature a vice president announcement, was immediately declared a crime scene, leading to a mix of anger and confusion among the attendees as they evacuated.
Aside from showcasing bravado, the attempt also resulted tragically with two fatalities, including the gunman, shot by the Secret Service, and two other attendees wounded. Jeff Traylor, in reflecting upon his son's actions in a statement released on Monday, said, "The kid is just wired differently." He further stated, "It doesn’t surprise me in the least. That has always been Jake. It was just a sad and horrible scene." Jake Traylor's response to the event was not just about personal safety but an immediate dedication to also protect those around him, displaying a human instinct to shield even amidst peril.
As the community grapples with the weight of what transpired, Coach Traylor's thoughts remain with those affected. He expressed, "My prayers continue to go out to everyone who was affected by this tragic event."
