In a dramatic turn of events in Southern California, a high-speed chase following a Bakersfield robbery led to a foot pursuit inside a Walmart in San Bernardino County, resulting in the arrest of five men. The chase began near noon on Wednesday when Bakersfield police sought help from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department to catch the suspects fleeing in a black Mercedes-Benz down Highway 395 toward Adelanto.
The pursued vehicle was spotted by deputies and officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), as well as a CHP helicopter, traveling at over 100 miles an hour and illegally passing other cars on the highway's shoulder. Despite efforts to intercept, "the driver refused to yield and continued to drive with complete disregard for public safety," according to an SBSD news release. The chase escalated when the suspects reached a Walmart in Victorville, where four men abandoned the vehicle and ran into the store, prompting an immediate evacuation of customers to safety.
Walmart employees acted swiftly to ensure that shoppers were moved to secure areas while deputies combed the store. San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, aided by a K-9 unit, eventually apprehended the four suspects. The driver who had initially escaped was also taken into custody following another brief chase. No injuries were reported amidst the chaos.
The names and specific charges against the individuals are pending release by the Bakersfield Police Department. "We would like to thank the employees of Walmart for their assistance in quickly evacuating their customers to a safe location," said the sheriff's department, expressing gratitude for the cooperation shown by Walmart staff and patrons which, facilitated a quick and secure resolution. The sheriff's department is continuing its investigation and encourages anyone with more information to contact the authorities.
