Hill District Residents Demand Action on Redevelopment Promises Amid Civic Arena Site ProjectSource: Google Street View

At recent meetings, the frustration among Hill District residents was palpable as they voiced their concerns over perceived unfulfilled promises related to neighborhood improvements. These concerns were directed at local leaders and stem from a redevelopment project for the former Civic Arena site in the Lower Hill District, which includes a new Live Nation music venue, as reported by TribLIVE.

Residents have been promised a myriad of community benefits such as a new public safety center, public art installations, and local recreation center improvements. Yet, as reported by TribLIVE, those in the neighborhood are still waiting. Marimba Milliones, president and CEO of the Hill District Community Development Corporation, articulated the community's sentiment during the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) board meeting, stating, “You have taxpayers and residents here who are pleading with you over and over.”

According to WTAE, Milliones remarked on the absence of a commitment by the developers to a First Source Hiring Center, and delays in implementing community benefit agreements. Craig Dunham, Penguins' senior vice president of development, responded to criticisms, indicating that the outcomes expected from the project will be material, meaningful, and profound but cautioned that patience is necessary.

The music venue at Logan Street and Wylie Avenue is scheduled to begin construction in the fall, with a predicted 18-month timeline for completion.
