Hillsborough County is bringing back its Recycling and Waste Reduction Art Contest for a second year. This creative challenge tasks students with melding visual art and ecological awareness to provoke thought about reducing waste and improving recycling efforts.

As reported by the Hillsborough County, Florida Government official newsroom, the contest centers on the theme, "What can we do…” to help the community that will reduce waste, reuse what we have, and recycle more." Entrants are encouraged to interpret this theme through drawings, made using traditional tools or digital programs like Photoshop, or through collages that can incorporate both drawings and photographs. Limitations are in place: Submissions created with the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI) will not be considered, ensuring the art remains a distinctly human endeavor.

The contest is exclusive to students who reside in Hillsborough County and who will be entering grades four through 12 by the onset of the 2024 academic year. According to the guidelines, hopefuls must embark on this artistic journey solo, wielding only their original ideas to concoct a piece worthy of the county’s recognition. The stakes are not solely for pride, the winners from each educational tier fourth through fifth, sixth through eighth, and ninth through 12th grades will walk away with prizes that underscore the value of sustainability. Prizes and fame aside, the contest serves a dual function, as an educational platform and a countywide call to action.

The county staff serving as judges are looking for creativity that not only showcases talent but also sparks discourse on environmental responsibility.
