Howard County is gearing up for its annual July 4th pyrotechnic extravaganza with a side of digital innovation. This year, county residents can expect their Independence Day to be a high-flying feast for the eyes, along with jam-packed connectivity—think Wi-Fi at local pools. Downtown Columbia Lakefront is about to be lit (quite literally) with a fireworks display anticipated to snag the gaze of some 50,000 onlookers, while the Columbia Association's (CA) 23 pools will give visitors a reason to keep their phones out with free public Wi-Fi, according to Howard County, Maryland.
County Executive Calvin Ball spilled the beans, "Summertime in Howard County is a special time, marked by family events, concerts, activities and our longstanding tradition of our July 4th Fireworks celebration at Downtown Columbia’s Lakefront", as per Howard County, Maryland. With dusk set to sparkle with explosives between 9:10 and 9:20 p.m., attendees can expect a 20-minute show of sparks after a day filled with food trucks, tunes, and patriotic vibes. The County isn't just about flash and bang, they're also heavily into bytes—with enhanced free public Wi-Fi at the Lakefront and an extension of such services to include CA’s pools, which last year saw over 422,000 people seeking a cool dip, according to Howard County.
Entertainment for the evening is booked solid with Merriweather Arts and Culture Center at the helm, bringing in acts like Quitapenas and Big Joe and the Dynaflows, starting at 6 p.m. Nick Mooneyhan, Director of Department of Recreation & Parks, joined the chorus of excitement, saying, “There’s no better way to ignite our patriotism and gratitude for those who have served through military service, political action, government or volunteer service, and acts of kindness than with an evening full of music, food, and fireworks at the Columbia Lakefront – the heart of this town,” as cited by Howard County, Maryland.
The tech-savvy moves—a partnership with CA and Wi-Fi upgrades—are part of a focused effort by the county to power up digital inclusivity. County go-getters have been all hands on deck to bridge the broadband gap that yawned wider in the wake of the pandemic. "When I first took office, Howard County had too many residents who did not have access to Wi-Fi or broadband and the disparity grew following the COVID-19 pandemic", said Ball, according to Howard County, Maryland. As for the foodie front, vendors will roll up between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m., bringing locals a variety of treats including Blowfish Poke & Grill and cousins Cousins Main Lobster, and Tacolicious.
Beyond the dazzling projectiles and tangy BBQ bites on offer, safety stays top of mind. Deputy Chief Gordan Wallace, Department of Fire & Rescue, flagged up a gentle reminder, as per Howard County, Maryland, “Fireworks can be extremely dangerous", urging the public to leave the incendiaries to the pros.
