Commuters on Interstate 77 experienced significant delays yesterday due to multiple vehicle incidents that impeded traffic flow in both directions. According to a report by WBTV, the first incident, a four-car crash, occurred around 9 a.m. in the northbound lanes at mile marker 22.6, close to Gilead Road. This collision resulted in the temporary closure of two lanes.
The Department of Transportation estimated that the lanes would be cleared by 11:06 a.m., however, the lanes opened up a few minutes earlier than expected. In this event, Medic confirmed that four people were hurt, but all injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. Meanwhile, a separate crash in the southbound lanes further contributed to the morning's traffic woes, this one occurring near Exit 4 for Nations Ford Road. Information obtained from RFLaw detailed the northbound crash and stated, clearance efforts were projected to last about an hour with the possibility of changes based on progress.
On the southbound side, details from WCNC reveal that two of three lanes were off-limits to drivers after the early morning commotion, which was reported around 6:30 a.m. Authorities reopened all lanes following the southbound incident, however, the right shoulder remained closed for an extended period, adding to the already heavy traffic impact during the morning commute.
In cases such as these, local commuters are often reminded of the unpredictable nature of roadway travel and the importance of driving alert and prepared for sudden halts in the ebbs and flows of morning routines.
