Berks and Lehigh County police are preparing to launch an aggressive-driving enforcement initiative along the US 222 corridor, starting on Monday. This action comes as part of a broader statewide campaign that is set to continue through August 18, aiming to promote road safety by curbing dangerous driving behaviors.
Authorities will be specifically targeting those who engage in high-risk maneuvers such as speeding, tailgating, and other forms of aggressive driving, according to an announcement from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. As heavy trucks often contribute significantly to the peril on the roads, they will also receive increased scrutiny during this enforcement wave. In an unusual move, the media has been invited to witness the enforcement activities firsthand, perhaps to amplify the initiative's message and remind drivers of the imminent dangers of aggressive driving.
Leading the charge will be Upper Macungie Police Department's Lieutenant Cory Reader, Fleetwood Police Department's Sergeant Thomas Focht, and Exeter Township Police Department's Sergeant David Bentz, who will spearhead their respective jurisdictions' involvement in the campaign. The enforcement is scheduled for Monday, July 29, and will stretch from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM, aiming to capitalize on the heavy morning traffic which often exacerbates driving behavior issues.
Designated areas for the crackdown include the intersection of US 222 and PA 100 in Lehigh County, at the southern end of the US 222 Bypass, and the intersection of US 222 and PA 662 in Berks County, as detailed on PennDOT's website. With these efforts, and by putting a spotlight on the enforcement activities, local police hope to not only catch offenders but also deter would-be violators, by sending a clear message that aggressive driving will not be tolerated on their roads.
