A pedestrian fatality in Kailua-Kona has sparked a negligent homicide investigation by Hawai'i Island police. The incident occurred early yesterday morning, July 22, when a 38-year-old male pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway. According to a report issued by local authorities on Nixle, the collision involved a green 2015 Subaru Forester which veered off the road and hit the pedestrian just south of the Kaloko/Honokōhau intersection.

The police were alerted to the incident at 3:54 a.m. and have determined that the Subaru, driven by 34-year-old Garrett Duran, was traveling northbound when it crossed the white fog line and struck the man walking mauka side. Following the collision, Duran chose to allegedly flee the scene but was located and arrested shortly after, a block away from where the accident took place. The victim, whose identity is being withheld until his family can be notified, was taken to Kona Community Hospital and pronounced dead at 4:59 a.m.

Duran is facing multiple charges, including operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant (OVUII), negligent homicide, manslaughter, inattention to driving, and failure to render aid. He is currently being held at the Kealakehe Police Station as the investigation by the Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit continues.
