Kissimmee residents planning on being away from their homes for vacation have a new security measure to consider. The City's police department has rolled out a "Vacation Watch" program aimed at keeping an eye on the properties of citizens on holiday. Those living in single-family homes can fill out an online form to notify the Kissimmee Police when their house will remain vacant, according to WFTV.
The program offers more than a cursory glance, the Kissimmee Police Department's Community Engagement Unit will review provided information that is then disseminated to patrol officers. Despite the practical benefits of such a surveillance-like service, do not expect the officers to care for pets, water plants, or collect mail as these are not included in the offerings. Anticipating vacations, residents must apply for the watch between 14 and 30 days before they plan on leaving, as stated on AroundOsceola.
"The Vacation Watch Program is intended to give residents peace of mind while they are on vacation," Chief Betty Holland explained in a statement, as detailed by WFTV. Homes can be monitored for a period ranging from 3 to 31 consecutive days. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to crime prevention and community involvement.
Interested residents can request a Vacation Watch by going to the city's official website. There, detailed instructions and the necessary forms are readily accessible. The Chief of Police emphasized the value of the offering, saying, "The information provided can be crucial in preventing crime or reaching a local emergency contact if needed", as per AroundOsceola.
