Knoxville's skyline reached a new milestone as Roane State Community College witnessed the final steel beam of its impending Health Science facility hoisted into place on Tuesday. The event signaled a major step forward in the construction of the Knox Regional Health Science Education Center, located on Sherrill Boulevard. As reported by WBIR, the building spans some 130,000 square feet and will offer health science programs from both Roane State and the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Knoxville.
Community members, along with project supporters, were treated to the ceremonial "topping off" as they watched their autographed banners of steel rise to the structure's climax. The nearly 8,000 students expected to annually traverse the classrooms will learn a range of disciplines including nursing, emergency medical services, and respiratory therapy, according to the details shared by The Mountain Press.
Beyond the fundamental health science programs, Roane State plans to expand to accommodate cardiovascular technology, healthcare administration, ultrasound, and public health courses. The new center will also play host to a large, advanced simulation center designed for students to experience near-tangible scenarios that will sharpen their skills. This immersion into life-like medical situations aims to enhance practical training, preparing students for the challenges they would face in the field.
While much of the construction funding has been oiled by generous company donations, the project is still canvassing for resources. The Roane State Foundation is eyeing a goal of $7.5 million in private philanthropy to see through the project's completion and to aid the task of financing the students’ education—a task elucidated by The Oak Ridger. If everything tracks according to plan, Roane State anticipates the flood of students to begin their studies by the fall of 2025, a timeline confirmed by Sarah Self, the institution’s director of marketing and communications.
