Los Angeles firefighters faced a blaze on Tuesday evening, July 16, at a commercial building in the Florence neighborhood. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reported a two-story building at 715 E 59th St caught fire, with the inferno raging predominantly on the roof. The emergency call, incident number 1434, was received at 7:13 PM and fire crews were swiftly dispatched to the scene.
The building, identified as a textile and clothing store, was undergoing a roofing construction operation which seems to have ignited the fire. Upon their arrival, firefighters were met with an offensive mode situation, actively taking on flames from the rooftop. The LAFD stated, "Firefighters arrived at a two-story textile/clothing store to find fire on the roof, apparently related to a construction roofing operation." The fire triggered the building's sprinkler system in the attic causing the ceiling to sag, and leak water onto the floors below, adding a complex layer to the firefighters' operations.
In a display of skillful coordination, it took the LAFD team of 44 firefighters a mere 15 minutes to subdue the rooftop fire. The success of the operation, often referred to colloquially as "knockdown," was confirmed by LAFD in their follow-up alert. No injuries were reported in the course of the event, a testament to the emergency crew's efficiency and precautionary measures in such hazardous circumstances.
Following the extinguishing of the fire, the firefighters' tasks were not over. They remained on the scene for some time after, engaged in "dewatering the building from the fire sprinkler water," according to LAFD's statement. The response and remediation efforts took place under the watch of Fire Station 33, with several battalion chiefs and task forces listed among the responding units. In the aftermath of such events, assessing the structural integrity of the building, and ensuring no residual risks persist becomes a priority for the safety of the workers, and the public.
The LAFD has yet to provide a cost estimate for the damages incurred by the store and the building itself.
