An investigation is underway by the Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division following a fatal incident at the Metropolitan Transit Authority's B Line North Hollywood Station. As reported by the LAPD, the in-custody death occurred on July 27 when officers, who were on a foot beat detail, observed an individual exhibiting erratic behavior and circumventing the fare at the station.
The subject, believed to be mentally ill, was followed by the officers, as per the LAPD. As the individual approached the edge of the platform, officers attempted to intervene over concerns that he might jump onto the tracks. During the subsequent attempt to detain him, "a minor use of force" was applied but the subject resisted and ultimately fled onto the railway tracks and into the subway tunnel.
The search led officers to discover the individual underneath the third rail within the subway tunnel. Tragically, the Los Angeles Fire Department pronounced the subject deceased at the scene, as detailed by the LAPD. The Force Investigation Division has since responded to the event and is now conducting a thorough probe into the circumstances that led to the death.
