A recent incident in east Las Vegas has resulted in serious injuries for both a police officer and a civilian after a Toyota Sienna minivan crashed into them. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) responded to the accident, which occurred at approximately 6:25 p.m. Tuesday near Boulder Highway and Desert Inn Road, as reported by KTNV. KTNV initially stated that the woman driving the minivan was arrested on suspicion of impairment.
However, new findings from the LVMPD's Collision Investigation Section suggest that the vehicle may have had a mechanical defect leading to the unfortunate event where the motorcycle officer was conversing with a civilian in the parking lot of a convenience store, the officer identified as Fernando Lua was moderately injured after the parked motorcycle he had dismounted was struck by the Sienna which tossed the motorcycle into him, at the same time the vehicle also collided with the 63-year-old civilian who sustained serious injuries, this according to a release provided by News3LV. News3LV added that both injured parties were hospitalized following the crisis with Lua being transported to UMC and the civilian to Sunrise Hospital.
The aftermath of the crash unfolded with the driver, whose name has not been disclosed, cooperating with the authorities at the scene. Subsequent to the initial arrest based on suspected impairment, further investigation revealed that the driver did not exhibit signs of impairment, this detailed in a recent statement by the LVMPD. As such, current jail and record checks indicate she is not facing any charges in relation to the collision.
