A Lenox man has entered a guilty plea after being charged with attempting to send obscene materials to what he believed was a 14-year-old girl, authorities announced. The individual on the receiving end was, in reality, an undercover law enforcement officer.
37-year-old Paul J. Bruzzi admitted guilt to one count of the attempt to transfer obscene material to a minor, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. During the exchanges that took place in September 2022, Bruzzi attempted, to coerce the supposed minor into sending him photos, and he delivered nine images and videos that included exposure of his genitalia. U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni has set Bruzzi's sentencing for Oct. 24, 2024.
The offense carries a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison with the possibility of a fine of up to $250,000, and a supervised release period of at least five years. Sentencing is slated to adhere to the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the statutory framework that governs the determination of criminal case sentences, as highlighted in a statement from the Department of Justice.
The case was prosecuted as a part of Project Safe Childhood, a national movement initiated by the Department of Justice in May 2006. This initiative, aims to tackle the escalating problem of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The campaign is led by the U.S. Attorneys' Offices and the DOJ's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, combining the efforts of multiple government levels to locate and prosecute perpetrators, and to rescue the victims. Further information on Project Safe Childhood can be found on the DOJ's website.
