Last Thursday, a dog was rescued by Livermore Police from an overheated vehicle in the sweltering summer heat. At approximately 11:45 a.m., the Livermore Police Department received a report of a dog trapped inside a Jeep at a Costco parking lot. At that time, temperatures outside had reached an unbearable 101 degrees. Officers who responded to the scene found the animal in distress, heavily panting, and locked inside the Jeep with the windows closed and the sunroof only slightly open.

According to Livermore Police’s Animal Services, the vehicle's interior temperature was recorded between 112-131 degrees. Recognizing the immediate danger, officers decided to quickly break a window of the Jeep, allowing them to rescue the dog. According to the Livermore Police Department, Animal Services Officer Leon expressed the severity of the situation, saying, “If we would have let this dog inside the car any further, it could have possibly led to death”.

The dog was promptly taken to a veterinary clinic for evaluation and treatment. Fortunately, the animal was deemed to be okay after the ordeal. Livermore Police reported that the dog had been estimated to have been left unattended in the vehicle for at least one hour before the rescue.

The dog's owner, who was not present at the rescue, now faces financial consequences. They are required to pay a fine for the incident and cover the costs of the veterinary care, shelter fees, and the repair of the vehicle's broken window. As per the Livermore Police Department, Officer Leon stressed the importance of pet owner responsibility and the risks of leaving animals in hot vehicles, saying, “We don’t want to get to that point of having to retrieve a deceased animal because someone was neglectful.”
