A significant water main break caused disruption in North Andover yesterday, with officials urging residents to stay clear of brown water that may be unsuitable for consumption. According to a report by 7News, the incident took place around 8:30 a.m. at the crossing of Greene Street and Massachusetts Avenue, resulting in a geyser-like exhibition of water vaulting towards local homes with associated debris in the fray.

Repairs were set in motion as a section of the water pipe was reported severely damaged; utility crews worked diligently to excise and replace it. The necessity to close the road and temporarily suspend water supply to approximately a dozen homes emerged in the course of the repair, according to Tim Willett, manager of North Andover Water and Sewer. He noted the rarity of such violent breaks, pointing to the severity of the situation. "It's a massive water main break, it’s probably a chunk of pipe that blew out of the cast iron water main," Willett related in a conversation with 7News.

Concurrently, the brown and potentially unsafe water prompted Town Manager Melissa Murphy-Rodrigues to advise denizens on precautionary measures; abstaining from ingestion and the use of the discolored water for culinary purposes were recommended until remediation was complete, as reported by The Boston Globe.
