A man is facing serious charges after allegedly driving under the influence and causing a collision in West Mifflin that involved several children, as reported by authorities. Clarence Newson allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Lewis Run Road and Clairton Road, causing a crash with another vehicle that was executing a lawful turn, as detailed by CBS Pittsburgh.
The incident which occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday led to the discovery of glassy eyes, slurred speech, and a smell of alcohol on Newson, signs that pointed to intoxication; additionally, he supposedly resisted arrest when police arrived at the scene he reportedly emerged from the vehicle with two bottles of alcohol that he subsequently discarded into nearby bushes. According to WPXI, witnesses observed the commotion and cooperated with law enforcement by providing their observations, with Newson then denying possession of the bottles before growing agitated and increasingly aggressive toward the officers.
Within the damaged Dodge Durango driven by Newson, police say they found not only a plastic bag of marijuana but also a fully loaded gun, complicating the charges against him. Newson, who had four minors with him, is now charged with a litany of offenses, including driving under the influence of alcohol, four counts of endangering the welfare of children, resisting arrest, possession of a small amount of marijuana, reckless driving, and disorderly conduct, among others; the occupants of the other vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, which held three people including one juvenile, were also attended to at the scene.
Furthermore, after being taken into custody Newson was brought to Jefferson Hospital and then the West Mifflin Police Station as officers dealt with the aftermath; the children who were in the car with Newson at the time were treated at the crash site, as was the woman in the other car entangled in this injudicious moment.
