A Mankato resident, Kamau Evans, has entered a guilty plea to a count of illegal firearm possession after a tense confrontation with Minneapolis police, authorities confirmed. On January 14, 2024, Evans reportedly shattered a window and broke into a woman's apartment in south Minneapolis, prompting her and her two children to flee the scene. A statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office detailed the ensuing chaos as Evans continued his rampage, assaulting people in another home after breaking a sliding glass door.
Officers responded rapidly to the residence where assaults were reported. While trying to rescue one of the victims, police were confronted by Evans. Found wielding a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, he discharged the gun in the officers' general direction, as detailed in court documents. Fleeing from law enforcement, Evans jumped out a bathroom window but was soon apprehended beside a garage, where the firearm was subsequently discovered by officials. Armed with the knowledge of Evans' prior convictions, which barred him from owning any firearms or ammunition, the legal system took swift action against him.
Yesterday, before Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz in U.S. District Court, Evans pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by an armed career criminal, according to the U.S. Attorney's announcement. Given his prior felony record, this latest firearm offense puts Evans in serious violation of federal law. A sentencing hearing is still pending, set to determine the consequences of his most recent criminal endeavor.
The successful apprehension and charging of Evans were the result of collaborative efforts by the FBI and the Minneapolis Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kristian Weir and Thomas Calhoun-Lopez are now prosecuting the case against Evans.
