In Marietta, Georgia, the Cobb County Drug Treatment Court recently held its first 'Successfully Sober Summer BBQ' at Laurel Park, a community gathering aimed at supporting the journey to sobriety for its participants and their families. The event, which took place on July 13, featured a range of outdoor activities, such as basketball, cornhole, tug of war, and sack races. According to a recent article published on the Cobb County Government website, there were also card games for those preferring shade, and children were able to enjoy face painting.
The afternoon was not just to casually pass the time; it represented an earnest attempt to showcase healthy, social activities that can aid in recovery. Porsha Middlebrook, Program Coordinator of the Cobb County Drug Treatment Court, was quoted on the Cobb County Government website expressing her enthusiasm for the community event. She highlighted their goal of fostering a sense of connection and respite from the often grueling road to recovery. "It was a wonderful experience to congregate outside of the courtroom with participants and their families, and it was a great opportunity for the court to model the possibility of pro-social activities on one’s journey to health and well-being," Middlebrook remarked.
Beyond games and entertainment, the BBQ prided itself on the generous spread of food, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Marietta Metro and Celebrate Recovery Eastwood Baptist Church members. The support of these community partners played a significant role in what the DTC Team Members considered a hugely successful event. Families and participants alike had the chance to indulge in a grand feast as they bonded over their shared experiences and commitment to sobriety.
The event was also an occasion to acknowledge the efforts of the program's participants, their families, and the professionals dedicated to their progress. The assertion was clear; it takes a robust support system to help individuals to gracefully navigate the throes of recovery. "We are proud of our participants and their supportive families for their steadfast approach to sobriety. Behind every program graduate is a team of professionals whose unwavering commitment is instrumental to their success," Middlebrook told Cobb County Government. Special thanks were given to Judge Kimberly A. Childs for her dedication to the program and the team working towards this supportive and healthy initiative.
