The Dearborn community commemorated the life of Melvindale police Cpl. Mohamed Said, who was fatally shot in the line of duty, through a series of moving funeral services and public shows of respect yesterday. Said, only 26, was slain while responding to a situation near a gas station on Oakwood Boulevard and Dix Road in Melvindale, according to The Detroit Free Press.

44-year-old Michael Lopez is facing multiple charges in connection with Said's death, including murder of a police officer. In response to Said's passing, law enforcement officers from various cities, including New York and Boston, converged to honor his memory. Melvindale Police Chief Robert Kennaley praised Said's dedication to his work and his community, "Anything that I needed, anything that the department needed, anything that the residents of the city of Melvindale needed, he got them, he would do anything for them," Kennaley informed The Detroit Free Press.

The funeral procession included a mix of solemn traditional ceremonies and public displays, with hundreds of vehicles traversing to the American Moslem Society for the funeral prayer. The outpouring of support reflected the diverse community Said had served, with people of all faiths and backgrounds coming together. "It's good to see the residents in the community out here supporting them as well," retired Taylor police officers Bill and Maureen Brinker told The Detroit Free Press while observing the procession.

During the emotional service at the American Moslem Society, Imam Belal Alzuhairi lauded Said for uniting people across differences, "Look at everyone who is here. They don't speak the same language, they don't have the same skin color or follow the same faith. But all of them came together as a united family for Mohamed," Alzuhairi stated in a ceremony covered by The Detroit News. Following the service, Said's burial took place at Woodmere Cemetery, with recitation of the Quran as attendees prayed for the departed officer.

In a heartwarming gesture amidst the tragic events, Michigan State Police replaced a boy's bike stolen by the suspect prior to his arrest, per Michigan's CBS affiliate CBS Detroit. The boy's loss had not gone unnoticed by the state troopers, who went beyond returning what was taken and ensured that all the children in the boy's family received new bicycles—a move reflective of the spirit of the late Officer Said. "We know [Mohamed Said] was with us when those bikes were presented to the family, because that's what he would have done," the Michigan State Police said.
