A somber ride to honor the memory of a man known as Big Mike in Rocky Mount took an unexpected, painful turn when a vehicle merged abruptly into a caravan of over 300 motorcycles, resulting in a collision that brought immediate disruption to the commemorative event. The motorcycle ride, which started at Flying Iron Harley Davidson, was a demonstration of solidarity and a celebration of life, yet within a mile of commencing, the gathering was fraught with peril and anguish, according to WRAL.
The incident left two members of the biking community, Amy and Linwood Mercer from Greenville, with multiple serious injuries, after their motorcycle was entangled in the crash near N. Winstead Avenue. The couple was thrown from their bike and subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Greenville for urgent care, as QC News reported. In what seemed like a swift response of camaraderie, a fellow rider from the Big Mike Memorial Ride who witnessed the crash, Scott King, paid the couple a visit at the hospital the following day.
King conveyed to CBS 17 News that despite the grim aftermath of the accident, both Amy and Linwood were conscious, communicative, and even in good spirits a resilient outlook that belies the severity of their injuries. Linwood Mercer relayed through King, "to tell everyone that he and his wife are going to bounce back from this nasty wreck". King openly recognized the long path to recovery ahead for the couple but shared a hopeful stance on their condition.
The cause underlying Saturday afternoon's crash remains under active investigation by the Rocky Mount Police Department's Traffic Enforcement and Crash Reconstruction Unit. The details of the collision have stirred significant concern within the biking community. Amidst the unfolding events, "Please continue to pray for" the couple, King implored on Facebook, noting the disturbance the accident has caused not just to the immediate victims but to those close-by, "I sure lost some sleep over them last night being we were so close behind them in the wreck.", as reported by QC News.
